Bushir

Bushehr (Persian بندر بوشهر‎ – Bandar Bushehr; obsolete Abusher, or Bandar Bushehr) is a port city in southern Iran, the administrative center of the province of Bushehr and the Shahrestan of the same name. It is located in the southwest of Iran, on the coast of the Persian Gulf. As of 2006, the population was 161,674. Iran’s first nuclear power plant is located in the southeastern suburb of Bushehr.

History
Bushehr was founded in 1736 by Nadir Shah on the site of the ancient settlement of Rishehr.
In 1763, Karim Khan allowed the British East India Company to establish their “transit point” in Bushehr. By the end of the 18th century, the British built a full-fledged naval base in Bushehr. In the 19th century, the port of Bushehr became one of the largest on the coast of the Persian Gulf. In 1856, the British occupied the city during the Anglo-Persian War of 1856-1857. The city garrison surrendered on December 9, 1856.
In 1915, during the First World War, the city was again captured by the British in order to prevent the spread of German influence there.
During World War II, Bushehr, along with Iraqi Basra, was the main port through which Lend-Lease goods (mostly military vehicles under their own power) were delivered to the USSR (through the territory of Iran).

Geography
Bushehr is located in the southwest of the country on the coast of the Persian Gulf.

Population
The majority of the population are Shia Persians. The city is also home to Arab and African minorities.

Economy
A nuclear power plant is being built in the Bushehr area. The construction was started in 1975 by the German concern Kraftwerk Union (German) Russian. and stopped in 1980 due to sanctions against Iran after the Islamic Revolution. In 1992, an intergovernmental agreement was signed on the construction of a nuclear power plant in Iran with Russian VVER-1000 reactors. In 1998, the Atomstroyexport company began completion of construction. Due to the condition set by Iran, the use of German facilities and equipment, which is an extremely technically difficult task, the implementation of the project was delayed.
