Abadan

Abadan (pers. آبادان‎) is a port city in southwestern Iran, in the province of Khuzestan.
As of 2006, the population is 217,988 inhabitants.
It is located on the border with Iraq, on the island of the same name in the delta of the Arvandrud River, 50 km from the Persian Gulf.

History
According to legend, the city was founded in the 8th-9th centuries by the Islamic saint Abbad. During the reign of the Abbasids, it developed as a port city, a salt spring and a place for the production of mats. Ibn Batutta describes Abadan as a small town in a salt valley. It was often the subject of disputes between neighboring states. Since 1847 – part of Persia. In 1935 it was renamed Abadan.
At the beginning of the 20th century, rich oil deposits were discovered near the city. In 1909-1913. The Anglo-Persian Oil Company built an oil refinery here, which by 1938 had become the largest oil refinery in the world. The plant was depicted on the reverse side of Iranian 100 rial banknotes issued in 1965 and 1971-1973.
The city was badly damaged during the Iran-Iraq war and was almost abandoned by civilians. The port and refinery resumed operations in 1993.

Culture
The city is home to the Abadan Technological Institute, founded in 1939. The Museum of Oil is planned to be opened soon.
