Sinjar

Sinjar (Arabic سنجار‎, Kurdish Şingal, Şengal) is a city in northwestern Iraq, located in the Ninewa Governorate. The administrative center of the district of the same name. The city is one of the centers of compact residence of Iraqi Yezidis.

Geographic location
The city is located in the western part of the governorate, in a mountainous area, south of the mountain range of the same name. The absolute height is 522 meters above sea level.
Sinjar is located approximately 107 kilometers west of Mosul, the provincial capital, and 395 kilometers northwest of Baghdad, the country’s capital.

History
During the Roman-Persian Wars, the city, which changed hands several times, was known as Singara. It was a strategically important and well-fortified fortress.
On August 14, 2007, in the two nearby villages of Tel Uzayr and Siba Sheh Khidre, inhabited mainly by Yezidi Kurds, an explosion occurred that claimed the lives of more than 300 people (according to other sources, more than 500).
