Agarak

Agarak (arm. Ագարակ) is a city in Armenia in the southern part of the Syunik region.

Geography
Agarak is located on the border with Iran, 9 km southwest of Meghri. It is located on the left bank of the Araks River on a small plain, surrounded on three sides by the slopes of the Zangezur Range. Railway station on the inactive and dilapidated line Yerevan – Nakhichevan – Horadiz.

History
Agarak was founded in 1949 as a military settlement, and in 1954 received the status of an urban-type settlement. In the 1990s, it received city status.
Most of the houses are multi-storey, made of pink tufa. Water supply is made from artesian sources.

Economy
Agarak is considered a city of miners and is a center of non-ferrous metallurgy. In 1853, a copper-molybdenum deposit was discovered, and in 1958, a copper-molybdenum plant was opened in the village, which includes a quarry and a processing plant. In 1989, the work of the plant stopped and was resumed only in 2000. In May 2004, the American company Comsup Commodities bought a 100% stake in a closed joint stock company for $600,000. In accordance with the agreement, the buyer undertook to invest $3.5 million in the enterprise within two years from the date of privatization. The funds were to be used for technological modernization and an increase in ore production. In the first half of 2004, the plant produced products worth 3.983 billion drams (+11.9% against the previous year). Export for this period increased by 8.5% and amounted to 1.771 billion drams. Currently, the plant provides jobs for about 1,000 people, that is, a fifth of the entire population of the city.

The city has a customs office – the Karchevan checkpoint and the Armenia-Iran border market.

On November 30, 2004, the construction of the Armenian section of the Iran-Armenia gas pipeline began in Agarak.
