Nuwara Eliya is a city in the Central Province of Sri Lanka. It is located at an altitude of 1884 m above sea level at the foot of Mount Pidurutalagala – the highest peak in Sri Lanka.

Toponymy
The name “Nuwara Eliya” is translated as “city on the plain” or “city of light”.

Production
Nuwara Eliya is one of the most famous places for tea production. Tea plantations are spread at an altitude of 1400 to 2400 meters. Nuwara Eliya tea is distinguished by its excellent strength and expressive aroma.

Tourism
“City of Light” Nuwara Eliya is the center of tourism. In Nuwara Eliya there are SPA and golf hotels. Gastronomic tours are regularly organized here, focused on acquaintance with tea traditions.

Ecotourism is also developed. Tourists come to admire the waterfalls of Diyaluma, Bambarakanda, as well as more miniature water cascades. Hakgala Botanical Garden is located 10 km from the city.
