Angeles

Angeles (Tagalog: Lungsod ng Angeles) is a city in the Philippines, in the Central Luzon region. It is part of the province of Pampanga.

Geographic location
The city is located in the southwestern part of the island of Luzon, east of the Sambales mountain range, approximately 67 kilometers northwest of the country’s capital Manila and covers an area of 60.27 km². The absolute height is 80 meters above sea level.

History
The settlement on the site of the modern city was founded in 1796 by Don Angel Pantaleon de Miranda, the head of the city of San Fernando. The village was named Culiat and administratively was the district (barrio) of San Fernando. On December 8, 1829, Culiat was separated into a separate municipality, and also received a new name – El Pueblo de los Angeles (El Pueblo de los Angeles). Later, the city was renamed twice more: first – in Los Santos Angeles de los Custodios (Los Santos Angeles de los Custodios), and then – in Angeles.
On March 17, 1899, Angeles was chosen as the seat of the government of the Philippine Republic. In the same year, the city hosted the celebration of the first anniversary of independence from Spain.

November 5, 1899, during the Philippine-American War, the city was captured by the US army. The American military established a camp in the vicinity, which later grew into a military base. Between January 1942 and January 1945 Angeles was occupied by the Imperial Japanese Army. In January 1945, Angeles was liberated during a joint operation between American and Philippine troops.
In 1947, an agreement was signed between the government of the independent Philippines and the Americans to maintain US sovereignty over military bases located in the Philippines, including Clark Air Base (English) Russian, located three miles west of Angeles. The presence of an American base in the city ensured its economic prosperity for many years. On January 1, 1964, pursuant to Republic Act No. 3700, Angeles received city status.
On June 15, 1991, an eruption began, located in the vicinity of the city, the Pinatubo volcano, which was later recognized as one of the strongest in the 20th century. During the eruption, the city of Angeles and Clark Air Base were almost completely destroyed, while the city was hit by millions of tons of mudflows. After the eruption, the US government began withdrawing the air base, and on November 26, 1991, it was handed over to the Philippine authorities.
