Urgench

Urgench (Uzb. Urganch, Urganch) is a city in Uzbekistan, the administrative center of the Khorezm region.
The population as of January 1, 2017 is 166.3 thousand inhabitants, in 2010 – 135.1 thousand inhabitants.

History
Urgench (until 1929 – New Urgench) was founded in the 17th century by the inhabitants of Old Urgench, who were forced to move from their native city due to low water caused by a change in the channel of the Amu Darya.

Interesting facts
From October 16 to October 22, 1979, on the initiative of Donald Knuth and Andrey Ershov, with the support of the USSR Academy of Sciences and the Academy of Sciences of the Uzbek SSR, the International Symposium “Algorithms in Modern Mathematics and Its Applications” was held in the city of Urgench, dedicated to the 1100th anniversary of the term “algorithm”. On the opening day of the symposium, the laying of the monument to al-Khwarizmi took place. At present, in the center of Urgench, al-Khwarizmi is dedicated to the created square and a new monument to this ancient scientist.
