Etymology
In the past, a village with the name Khonashen, where “shen” – Arm. “village”, and “khona”, depending on the language of the source, allows different interpretations (“village, dwelling” or “reservoir, well, spring”). In 1925 it was transformed into a city and renamed Martuni, after the pseudonym of the party leader A.F. Myasnikov (Myasnikyan).
In the past, the village was also called “Lower Karanlug”.
The Azerbaijani name of the city is not directly related to Martuni: it comes from the western suburb inhabited by Azerbaijanis in the Soviet years – the village of Khojavend.

Karabakh War 1991-1994
During the war in Nagorno-Karabakh, during the defense of Martuni, an Armenian from the Diaspora, Monte Melkonyan, who later became the commander of the Martuni detachment, especially distinguished himself. According to some reports, the inhabitants of Martuni expressed an opinion about renaming the regional center to Monteaberd (Armenian Մոնթէաբէրդ), in honor of Monte Melkonyan. The renaming project was never supported by the authorities of the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic, but at the same time, the installation of a makeshift road sign with that name was recorded.
