Trois Rivières

Trois-Rivieres (French Trois-Rivières – Three Rivers) is the fifth largest city in the Canadian province of Quebec. Trois-Rivieres is also the largest settlement and the capital of the historical, cultural and administrative region of Moricy in the heart of Quebec. The population is 126 thousand people.

Geographic location
Trois-Rivieres is of great strategic importance for the province of Quebec. It is located on the northern bank of the St. Lawrence River, whose valley is densely populated. It is also the main transit point located between the largest metropolis of Quebec – the city of Montreal and the provincial capital – Quebec. Opposite, on the south bank of the river is the town of Bekancourt.

History and toponymy
The city was founded on July 4, 1634. Thus, this is the second oldest settlement in modern Canada (after the city of Quebec, founded in 1608). The city is located on three branches of the mouth of the St. Maurice River (English) Russian. at its confluence with the St. Lawrence River (hence its name, translated from French meaning “three rivers”).

After the British occupation in 1760, a significant number of English-speaking settlers also settled here, giving it the similar English name Three Rivers. Although it still sometimes appears in the names of local buildings (for example, in the name of the local academy), modern English uses the French Trois-Rivières almost exclusively. It is noteworthy that the inhabitants of the city – the Troariviere – are called trifluviens in French (from the Latin translation of the city’s name).
