Rashid

Rashid (Arabic رشيد‎; Coptic Ⲣⲁϣⲓⲧ, Rashit; formerly Rosetta) is a city and the center of a district in the Governorate of Buheira in Egypt. It is located in the north of the governorate, 45 km northeast of Alexandria, on the left bank of the main western branch of the Nile (which is also called Rashid), 5 km from the Mediterranean Sea. The population of the city is 64,429 people (2005).

Name
The ancient Egyptians called this area Rakhit, later the name was transformed into Rashid.

History
In ancient times, a little to the north, there was the city of Bolbitin. Rashid was founded around 800. In the Middle Ages, Rashid was important as a trading city, which flourished until the construction of the Mahmudiya canal and the reconstruction of the harbor in Alexandria, where most of the trade passed. The city of Rashid became known in the West as Rosetta. So it was called by the French during the Egyptian campaign of Napoleon Bonaparte in 1798-1799. Rashid became famous thanks to the Rosetta stone, which was found by French soldiers in 1799.

Sights
Rashid has 12 historical mosques and 22 historical buildings built during the times of the Mamluks and the Ottoman Turks.
