Arsenal ratings: William Saliba and three other stars shine in cagey Crystal Palace win

Arsenal kickstarted their Premier League campaign with a steely 2-0 win on the road at Crystal Palace thanks to goals from Gabriel Martinelli and Marc Guehi, who unfortunately turned the ball into his own net. The Gunners are under pressure to deliver this season after surrendering fourth place to Spurs last term and their campaign got off to the best possible start with three points and a clean sheet.

Arsenal were largely dominant, although Palace did have their moments in which they had the visitors on the back foot.

The Eagles had plenty of work to do from the get-go though when Arsenal took an early lead through Martinelli in the 20th minute.

The Brazilian nipped in to head home from close range after Oleksandr Zinchenko headed the ball back across the face of goal from a corner.

Bukayo Saka helped seal the victory late in the second half when his cross was turned in past his own goalkeeper by Palace defender Guehi.

Here’s how the Gunners rated at Selhurst Park as they started their season on a positive note in south east London…

Took his time on the ball and put Arsenal under some unwanted early pressure after taking the lead.

Did pull off a fine save to deny Odsonne Edouard in the first half. Clean sheet.

Had his hands full trying to deal with Wilfried Zaha but generally done enough, despite some groggy moments. Very composed on the ball but booked for fouling the winger.

Made defending look easy. Really strong debut form the 21-year-old, who made an exceptional tackle to stop Zaha in his tracks in the second half.

There was a shout for a Crystal Palace when the ball struck his arm after dropping out the sky. Defended well but nearly turned into his own net in the second half after being fouled by Jordan Ayew.

Stung palms of Vicente Guaita from range, whilst also marking his Arsenal debut with an assist for Martinelli.

Strong and provided Arsenal with some mettle in the middle of the park.

Booked for diving but decent enough performance from one of Arsenal’s leaders.

Not as sharp as usual but to be expected given this is the first game of the season. Decision-making was poor at times but did bump up his rating by earning an assist for Arsenal’s second when his cross went in off the head off Marc Guehi.

Should have been more decisive in key moments, could have had a shot at goal but opted to pass – messing up several opportunities.

Looked very rusty but ultimately netted the opener, which was all that mattered.

Missed a sitter five minutes into the match with his left foot but made amends by heading home.

Tremendous centre-forward display. Ran his socks off and looked very, very sharp. The goals will come, Jesus looks a real asset to this Arsenal side.

Chelsea team news: Expected XI vs Tottenham as Thomas Tuchel given Marc Cucurella dilemma

Chelsea are set to welcome Tottenham to Stamford Bridge on Sunday (4.30pm) as Thomas Tuchel’s side go in search of another three points following their opening day Premier League victory over Everton last weekend. The Blues beat the Toffees 1-0 courtesy of a Jorginho penalty nine minutes into stoppage time at the end of the first half.

Tuchel will have a dilemma on his hands for the visit of the Lilywhites as he decides whether to start Marc Cucurella. The Spaniard joined the Blues from Brighton ahead of their opening clash against Frank Lampard’s team but could only muster a place on the bench.

The revigorated Tottenham side, meanwhile, will pose Chelsea a huge threat following their 4-1 thrashing of Southampton last time out. And Express Sport takes a look at the starting XI Tuchel could roll with.

Edouard Mendy has been in fine form since moving to west London from Rennes two years ago and kept the 49th clean sheet of his Blues career last time out. The Senegal goalkeeper will line-up between the posts once again for this one as he looks to keep the likes of Harry Kane and Son Heung-min at bay.

If Cucurella is handed his first start in Chelsea colours, he could come in for Cesar Azpilicueta and play on the left side of a back three. The Blues’ ageing defence rarely looked comfortable against the Toffees and could be exposed against better sides.

Summer signing Kalidou Koulibaly made his Blues debut last time out and could prove to be a sagacious signing for his new employers if he can match the form he displayed at Napoli. The 31-year-old could play at the centre of defence against Spurs, with Thiago Silva to his right.

Tuchel is well-known for giving his wing-backs the licence to roam forward and could once again ask Reece James to carve out opportunities for the team’s attackers down the right. Ben Chilwell won his side’s penalty against Everton and could keep his place on the left flank if Cucurella is given a more defensive role. N’Golo Kante, who struggled with injuries last season, will be confident of lining-up in the centre of the pitch, alongside Jorginho.

Chelsea were far from convincing in front of goal last weekend as they failed to score from open play against their Merseyside hosts. But Tuchel could keep faith with the same front three that started that match. Summer signing Raheem Sterling will be expected to produce the goods throughout the campaign and could start in a central position for the visit of Antonio Conte’s men, while Mason Mount and Kai Havertz could provide the creativity either side of him.

Tottenham team news: Expected XI vs Chelsea as Richarlison gives Conte food for thought

Tottenham will be looking for a statement win when they take on bitter rivals Chelsea in a mouthwatering clash on Sunday afternoon. Spurs have a rotten record at Stamford Bridge, and have remarkably tasted victory just once in the Premier League era courtesy of a 3-1 win back in 2018.

However, under Antonio Conte this Tottenham team look to be building something special, and they got their new campaign off to the perfect start with a 4-1 thrashing of Southampton on the opening day of the season.

Chelsea will be a totally different kind of test, however, and here Express Sport takes a look at the starting XI Conte is likely to pick as his side aim to pick up a rare three points in west London.

Despite conceding to a surprise early James Ward-Prowse strike, Hugo Lloris enjoyed a relatively comfortable day against Southampton last week. The French shot-stopper is Spurs’ longest-serving player, and is starting his 11th campaign with the Lilywhites.

The 35-year-old remains one of Conte’s most trusted lieutenants, and is in line to make his 418th appearance in all competitions for the club.

Spurs look set to complete the permanent signing of Cristian Romero for £41m in the coming days following his hugely successful loan spell from Atalanta. The tough-tackling Argentinean has been worth every penny of that fee so far as he has completely transformed his side’s backline, and the 24-year-old looks set for another start vs the Blues.

Eric Dier grabbed Spurs’ second goal vs the Saints last week with a cute header from Son Heung-min’s cross, and he will start as the man in the middle, with the ever-reliable Ben Davies on the left-hand side of the back three.

Despite facing criticism at times last season, Emerson Royal was one of Spurs’ stand-out performers vs Southampton, and there should be no reason for Conte to drop the Brazilian as he looks to gain some momentum.

Summer signing Yves Bissouma is still waiting for his first competitive start, and he may have to be patient again, with the tried and tested combination of Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Rodrigo Bentancur most probably favoured at the Bridge. The ever-improving Ryan Sessegnon is expected to be given the nod on the left flank.

After missing out on the first game of the season through suspension, £60m summer signing Richarlison is available to Conte for the first time, and a grudge match against Chelsea is exactly the sort of clash he would relish.

However, it is hard to see how any of Dejan Kulusevski, Harry Kane or Son could be dropped at the moment, and Richarlison is likely to be used as an option off the bench. It will be intriguing to see what kind of impression he can make if Spurs need him to come up with the goods in the second half.

What Erik ten Hag has said about Hakim Ziyech as Man Utd boss eyes surprise Chelsea raid

Erik ten Hag is spearheading a pursuit of wantaway Chelsea forward Hakim Ziyech this summer but has met resistance from Manchester United’s recruitment department. And it’s no surprise he’s keen to reunite with the Moroccan at Old Trafford based on his comments back in their Ajax days.

Ten Hag has identified Ziyech as an alternative left-footed forward to Antony and wants to sign him as part of a summer in which he has had full control of transfer targets. However, United have reportedly overruled his desire on this occasion.

The 29-year-old shone at Ajax under Ten Hag’s watch before joining Chelsea in a £33m deal in 2020. And before his departure, the now-United boss heaped praise on his ‘brilliance’ and pinpointed the trait that stands him apart from the rest.

“He is a character, headstrong. But that also makes him brilliant,” Ten Hag told Ajax TV after Ziyech’s final training session with the club. “He sees things that others don’t see. Sometimes he is a trainer’s nightmare, but you have to give him space. If they start playing on their responsibility, you see the development. He took Ajax by the hand, and we were very successful together.”

Ten Hag also admitted he has qualities it’s difficult to find in other players, interestingly name-dropping his priority target, Frenkie de Jong, as a similar scenario after his move to Barcelona in 2019.

He explained: “Hakim has been very decisive, and he has such specific qualities that cannot simply be found in other players. It was the same for Frenkie de Jong last season. These are players who can make the difference in the offensive phase.”

It’s no coincidence he’s looking to get the two back together at Old Trafford, especially amid his quest for more ‘character’ in the United dressing room.

Chelsea head coach Thomas Tuchel has made it clear Ziyech is surplus to requirements with his summer transfer business. The Blues have signed Raheem Sterling in a £50m deal and have looked to recruit one more attacker before the September 1 deadline. They failed in a bid to sign Raphinha and are in talks over luring Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang back to the Premier League.

But despite Ten Hag’s wish to link back up with Ziyech, M16 seems to be an unrealistic destination given the club’s stance. Perhaps the situation will change if the options to bolster their attacking ranks continue to fade in the final three weeks of the window.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp gives view on intriguing Nunez vs Haaland Golden Boot battle

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp insists that summer signing Darwin Nunez isn’t motivated by an individual battle with Manchester City star Erling Haaland to win this season’s Premier League Golden Boot and instead just wants to help his team win matches. But the German admits that Nunez could turn his attentions to a personal crusade to outscore the Norwegian striker should he still be in the running to land the honour at the business end of the campaign.

“I don’t know Darwin well enough yet but at the moment he is just concerned that he can score for us and set up goals for us or whatever,” Klopp said. “I think at the moment he isn’t bothered about comparisons or rivalries, not at all. But if there was a situation towards the end of the season about goalscoring or whatever then there could be, yes.

“I don’t think Mo Salah would look at that either yet. It was always clear that Haaland at City would work out. It’s a chance-producing side and he is a finisher so it was always clear and that is why it is not a surprise or whatever.”

Nunez put pen-to-paper on a six-year deal at Anfield this summer after the Reds shelled out an initial £64million to prise him away from Benfica. And the striker opened his Liverpool account on his Premier League debut as he came off the bench to score in his side’s 2-2 draw with Fulham last weekend.

Haaland, meanwhile, has joined the Citizens from Borussia Dortmund and got off the mark for his new team against West Ham last Sunday as he struck from the penalty spot before later adding his second in a 2-0 victory.

Both players have already illustrated their goalscoring talents for their previous clubs and could well enjoy fruitful seasons in England this time around. But when asked whether he had set Nunez a goals target for this campaign, Klopp replied: “No I didn’t – of course no.”

Klopp will be desperate for his side to get their first win of the season on Monday night when they host Crystal Palace. And he is confident his team can enjoy another fine campaign if they concentrate on their own performances.

“We just try to make sure that our football – the football idea we have – that it is obvious again and consistently all the time,” the 55-year-old added. “Because if we can do that it is still very uncomfortable to play against us and that is really my first concern.

“I hope that happens again because from there we can then start thinking about twists and tweaks and how we can do this and how we can improve areas. But now the first thing for us is that we bring in the intensity and we will be fine.”

Arsenal and Man Utd eye Brighton star Moises Caicedo following stunning form

Brighton beat a host of European clubs to sign Caicedo from Independiente del Valle in a £4.5million deal in February 2021. And they have reaped the rewards so far as he’s battled to become a starter under Graham Potter at the Amex Stadium.

But the Seagulls may face a fight to keep him around for much longer, with several big-hitters eyeing a move in the coming weeks. According to the Sunday Mirror, Arsenal and United join West Ham United, Atletico Madrid, Bayer Leverkusen and Juventus in monitoring his situation.

His impressive form for club and country has made him hot property, and his stock rose higher with a sensational performance in Brighton’s opening weekend 2-1 win at Old Trafford. Caicedo bossed the United midfield and undoubtedly made club figures regret opting against recruiting him when they had the chance weeks before Brighton stole a march.

But the Red Devils are looking to right their previous wrongs by reigniting their interest as Erik ten Hag scours the market for midfield reinforcements ahead of the September 1 transfer deadline. They may face a tough task luring him from the south coast, though, with Brighton likely unwilling to part ways.

Caicedo is an important part of Potter’s plans after establishing his place in the second half of last term, and Brighton don’t need to raise funds after offloading Marc Cucurella to Chelsea for £63m earlier this month. They also lost key midfielder Yves Bissouma to Tottenham Hotspur in the same window, pocketing a further £25m for his services.

Caicedo has earned his plaudits as a defensive midfielder since regularly featuring in the Premier League, boasting pace, power and technical ability. And his name is bound to be on even more lips after the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, where he’s expected to play a crucial role for Ecuador.

A transfer this summer must be deemed unlikely given Brighton’s lack of pressure to sell, his current status in Potter’s ranks, and the short time the Seagulls would have to unearth a worthy replacement. However, he looks to be yet another star the club will eventually pass on for a hefty profit as another credit to their recruitment team.

Barcelona ‘will open talks’ with Chelsea in fresh Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang transfer twist

Barcelona now reportedly plan to ‘open talks’ with Chelsea regarding a move for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. Chelsea are still looking to bring in a replacement for Romelu Lukaku after the striker was allowed to join Inter Milan on loan.

Kai Havertz has occupied the role through the middle as a false nine, but Thomas Tuchel reportedly wants a recognised striker in his squad. Aubameyang has since emerged as a possible target for the Blues with Barcelona having signed Robert Lewandowski this summer.

There appeared to be some apprehension from Barcelona’s side letting Aubameyang go with Lewandowski still not registered to play in La Liga up until this week. But another economic lever activated by Barcelona has since given them the funds to get Lewandowski and other new signings registered.

The former Bayern Munich striker was in the starting line-up for Barcelona’s opening league match against Rayo Vallecano, alongside Raphinha and Ousmane Dembele. Aubameyang came on in the final few minutes as Barcelona looked to find a winner, while Frenkie de Jong also came off the bench midway through the second half.

With Barcelona now registering their new signings, it appears as though they’re ready to discuss the possibility of letting Aubameyang leave. According to the PA news agency, Barcelona are ready to ‘open discussions over a fee’ for Aubameyang with Chelsea.

The financial situation at Barcelona means the club are still looking to offload some of their high-earners and Aubameyang could be set to leave. It is claimed that Barcelona want a fee in the region of £20m while Chelsea are edging towards ‘making a reasonable offer’.

The report adds that Chelsea may seek a loan deal while paying Aubameyang’s full wages for the season. But Barcelona reportedly prefer a permanent transfer as they still have other transfer targets of their own.

Marcos Alonso remains a top target for Barcelona while Cesar Azpilicueta continues to be linked with the Nou Camp, despite recently signing a new deal. Chelsea face a tough second match of the season today against Antonio Conte’s Tottenham.

Both teams got off to a winning start last week, although Chelsea were made to work with their 1-0 victory over Everton. Raheem Sterling, Kalidou Koulibaly and Marc Cucurella all made their debuts for Chelsea and are expected to be involved again.
