Taylor Swift is celebrating the release of her new song Carolina by sharing details about creating the ballad with her fans on social media.
Carolina is featured on the soundtrack to the upcoming Sony Pictures film Where The Crawdads Sing, which hits theaters July 15.
Taylor explained that she wrote the track over a year ago and that it centers around a girl plagued by both loneliness and curiosity.
Continuing on in a follow-up tweet, Taylor revealed that she wrote Carolina ‘alone in the middle of the night’ and that she called on her collaborator Aaron Dessner to bring the song to life.
‘[Aaron] and I meticulously worked on a sound that we felt would be authentic to the moment when this story takes place.
‘I made a wish that one day you would hear it. “Carolina” is out now,’ the Grammy Award-winner concluded.
She attached the song’s stunning lyric video, which features footage of Where The Crawdads Sing star Daisy Edgar-Jones from the forthcoming film.
Earlier in the day, Taylor surprised fans by announcing she’d be releasing Carolina at midnight Thursday in a post shared to her Instagram just hours before.
‘Carolina. Midnight,’ she wrote over an image of trees along a riverbank, adding a short audio clip of the song.
The I Knew You Were Trouble hitmaker last released all new music in 2020 when she debuted her Evermore album.
However, Taylor has shared remakes of past songs and bonus tracks while in the process of rerecording her old albums.
Where The Crawdad Sings is an adaptation of Delia Chase’s New York Times Bestselling 2018 novel of the same name.
The Olivia Newman-directed movie stars Daisy Edgar-Jones and was produced by Reese Witherspoon.
The 11-time Grammy Award winner first announced that she had contributed a song to the soundtrack in March.
She posted the film’s trailer to her Instagram page, during which a short snippet from Carolina could be heard.
In her caption, Taylor shared her enthusiasm for the film and the source material. She revealed that she wrote the song solo with Folklore and Evermore collaborator Aaron Dessner producing the track.
‘Where The Crawdads Sing is a book I got absolutely lost in when I read it years ago,’ Taylor wrote.
‘As soon as I heard there was a film in the works starring the incredible @daisyedgarjones and produced by the brilliant @reesewitherspoon, I knew I wanted to be a part of it from the musical side.’
She continued, ‘I wrote the song ‘Carolina’ alone and asked my friend @aarondessner to produce it.
‘I wanted to create something haunting and ethereal to match this mesmerizing story. You’ll hear it fully soon, but for now check out the @crawdadsmovie trailer for a clip!’
A slightly longer clip of the song was featured in the second trailer for the movie, which was released in May.
According to Variety, Reese and Olivia shared additional information about Carolina during a roundtable discussion about the film that was live-streamed on June 17.
The director said that Taylor ‘wrote this gorgeous letter to us’ and submitted it ‘out of the blue’ to the film’s production team.
She added that it was recorded using instruments that were available before 1953 in keeping with the time period during which the film is set. Carolina was also recorded in just one take as was the standard with songs of the time.
‘The first time I listened to it, I just started bawling and I said, ‘I don’t know what’s happening to me right now,’ ‘ Olivia said.
‘ I mean, I love singing along to Taylor Swift songs but I never cry like this.’
Reese explained the backstory of how the pop superstar became inspired to write the track.
‘She read this book and loved it so much, and then she heard we were making a movie [during the period] she was making her Folklore album and then she wrote a song with that whole Folklore team, which was so haunting and magical and beautiful,’ the Big Little Lies actress said.
Olivia added, ‘She had gone and written this song out of just pure inspiration and sort of said, ‘I don’t know if you’ll like it, but here it is.”
The director confirmed that Carolina will play over the film’s ending credits. She explained that they wanted the tone of the movie’s ending to match that of the book’s conclusion.
‘We wanted to leave audiences with that same sort of emotional feeling,’ Olivia said.
‘And her song just leans right into that.’
Where The Crawdads Sing will be released in theaters on July 15.
