Sven Goran-Eriksson defends Victoria Beckham and 2006 World Cup WAGs brigade

Sven Goran-Eriksson has defended Victoria Beckham, Coleen Rooney and the rest of the 2006 World Cup WAGs brigade after they were accused of stealing the spotlight.

The Swedish football manager, 74, insisted that the group were doing ‘totally normal things’ as the glamorous crew sat in the stands and enjoyed fun-filled nights out in Germany during the tournament.

Led by Victoria, 48, Coleen, 36, and Cheryl Cole, 39, the wives and girlfriends famously commanded the spotlight, garnering more attention than their partners, who actually took to the pitch.

The group were kitted out in designer-clad outfits and their endless shopping, spats and nightly partying throughout the trip were seen as a major distraction for the footballers at the time.

Speaking to Boyle Sports World Cup, Sven has reflected on the scandal and defended the group, but admitted the heightened attention on the Spice Girl didn’t ‘make it easy’.

The coach also defended the WAGs being in attendance, rather than sitting ‘bored’ in a hotel, after the brigade were seen out-and-about in Germany.

‘One of the wives [at the World Cup] was Victoria Beckham and of course that didn’t make it easier, it made it fantastic for the press,’ he explained.

‘We saw the wives maybe once a week at dinner and I decided when that should be, and the rest of the days of course the wives were invited here and there and the FA helped them not to be sat in a hotel, bored, and I think that was great.’

Sven admitted that ‘whatever’ the WAGs did at the time was seen as a scandal due to the heightened attention on them at the time.

He added: ‘Whatever they did it was a scandal. If they went to a bar, if they went to a restaurant, if they went out shopping… [but] they were [doing] totally normal things. I found the reaction a little bit unhelpful.’

It has been widely claimed that the WAGs partying behaviour was the reason that the partners were banned from the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

Elsewhere, David Beckham has recently addressed the claims that the WAG brigade stole the limelight with their designer-laden looks at the 2006 World Cup.

Speaking in June, he admitted that the wives and girlfriends went ‘too far’ after they stole the show.

David admitted that Victoria grimaces at some of the looks she sported when she reflects on the competition years later, in an interview for Gary Neville’s The Overlap YouTube channel.

Reflecting on the decision to have the footballer’s families take centre stage during that World Cup, David admitted he was never against having the loved ones support them at the tournament.

He said: ‘I think there was attention on them. I always believed as an England captain, having wives and girlfriends and the kids around wasn’t a bad thing.

‘Once you’re in a training camp, you’re in training camp, you have to focus, but I think at the start of a tournament, it’s not a bad thing.’

But the sportsman, who was captain of the Three Lions for the tournament which saw them crash out in the quarter-finals after losing a penalty shootout against Portugal, confessed the obsession with the WAGs did go ‘too far’.

He said: ‘Looking back, that whole culture – there was a lot of attention around that and whether people behaved themselves in the right manner, I don’t know.

‘Even Victoria – she’s the first to say now – what was I doing, what was I wearing, why would I do that? It did [go too far].

‘There was more spoken about the WAGs than football. at the time, players want to focus on the tournament. It went too far, but I do believe having the WAGs and family around is a good thing.’

Victoria joined the army of WAGs that famously descended on Germany during that World Cup with their families, commanding attention with their designer-clad outfits as they cheered on their husbands in the stands.

Known for her glamorous designer outfits, Victoria also donned an England Rocks tank top for England’s match against Trinidad and Tobago.

As he and Gary toured the Qatar hotel that will host England during the World Cup later this year, David admitted he preferred a remote spot for the club to train and unwind ahead of such crucial ties.

He told his former teammate: ‘Every player was different. One you’re in the tournament, you had to be involved in where we stayed, the atmosphere, the games room.

‘Once we started getting players like Rooney into the squad, you had players who enjoyed games. The things you look for is tranquility.

‘You want to be in the middle of nowhere. As much as you want a bit of atmosphere, all you care about is the games. This [England’s Qatar hotel] is perfect.’

Evan Peters shares the ‘one rule’ Dahmer writer Ryan Murphy issued star ‘Never sympathise’

WandaVision and American Horror Story star Evan Peters has now taken on his most challenging role in portraying one of America’s most infamous criminals, the serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer. While the series has been met with controversy from Netflix viewers, Evan has revealed how writer Ryan Murphy approached the series to try and ensure the depiction of the killer’s vile crimes was as respectful as possible.

Evan confirmed Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story was intended to be shown more from the side of the victims than the killer himself.

After working with Ryan on several instalments of American Horror Story, Evan reteamed with the TV producer for one of his most ambitious and risky projects yet.

“We had one rule going into this, from Ryan,” Evan confirmed.

“It would never be told from Dahmer’s point of view. As the audience, you’re not really sympathising with him.”

Dahmer’s crimes have been detailed in multiple documentaries and dramas over the years, and the killer has notably been portrayed by actors Jeremy Renner and Ross Lynch.

With the true crime genre’s more recent wave of popularity in mind, Ryan’s series takes a different approach by focusing more on the stories of his victims and the surrounding court cases.

The lead star explained: “You’re not getting into his plight, you’re watching it from the outside.

“It’s called the Jeffrey Dahmer Story, but it’s not just him and his backstory.”

“It’s the repercussions, it’s the society. It’s how society and our system failed to stop him multiple times because of racism and homophobia.”

The series has been particularly praised for putting Tony Hughes, Dahmer’s 12th victim, front and centre in episode six, Silenced.

“It’s just a tragic story that affected everybody and gets their side of the story told,” Evan continued. “The Jeffrey Dahmer story is so much bigger than just him.”

Evan also maintained Ryan wanted the series to be as respectful as possible to the victims and their families.

While the key points of Dahmer’s life have been recreated, the drama takes care not to linger on the details of the murders he committed.

“You need to have certain plot points because he did do these things,” Evan added in Netflix’s interview for the series.

“But you don’t need to embellish them. You know, we get it. You don’t need to see it over and over again.

“Honestly, I was very scared about all the things he did and diving into that.

“Trying to commit to that was absolutely going to be one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to do in my life. I wanted it to be very authentic. But in order to do that, I was going to have to go to really dark places and stay there for an extended period of time.”

Evan also credited the show’s crew for helping keep his motivation going during filming.

While his performance has received universal praise, the rest of the series hasn’t gone down so well with viewers.

Some have called the drama exploitative despite its aversion to depicting Dahmer’s crimes, while others have argued the series has reinvented the crime genre by giving a much louder voice to the killer’s victims.

However, a relative of one of his victims, Eric, tweeted: “I’m not telling anyone what to watch, I know true crime media is huge right now, but if you’re actually curious about the victims, my family (the Isbell’s) are p****d about this show.

“It’s retraumatizing over and over again, and for what? How many movies/shows/documentaries do we need?” (sic)

Heartbreak High is a smash hit for Netflix, silencing critics who said it was ‘took woke’

The Heartbreak High reboot on Netflix has exceeded expectations by becoming one of the streaming platform’s most-watched programs globally.

The Australian teen drama dropped on September 14, and viewers from around the world – including those unfamiliar with the 1990s TV series on which it is based – are addicted to the show.

It was the sixth most-viewed English-speaking program worldwide in mid-September and the second most-viewed in Australia.

The series is most popular in Australia, Britain, America and parts of Africa.

The reboot has racked up more than 18 million viewing hours in just two weeks.

Its quick success silences those who criticised the show prematurely because its diverse cast made it seem ‘too woke’.

While the cast does feature racially mixed, nonbinary and even autistic characters, the strong storylines and sharp writing mean it’s far from just a diversity showcase.

The original Heartbreak High was a popular teen drama in the ’90s, set in the fictional Hartley High, with plots tackling racism, human rights and other real-life issues.

Netflix announced earlier this year it was reviving the show for a new generation.

The reboot had been criticised in some circles as a ‘woke’ update of the ’90s high school drama that made Callan Mulvey and Ada Nicodemou household names.

Que Minh Luu, Netflix’s Director of Content in Australia and New Zealand, said at the time: ‘Making Heartbreak High for today’s generation of Australians has been a long-standing dream.’

Original Heartbreak High star Salvatore Coco has given the show his tick of approval.

‘I thought it was fantastic. There were concerns about it being too “woke”. But no, it touched on the topics and wasn’t in your face,’ he said on the TV Blackbox podcast.

Perrie Edwards and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain targeted by burglars at £3.5million mansion

Perrie Edwards and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain have been burgled at their £3.5million home on an exclusive road in Cheshire. The couple were downstairs with their son Axel when thieves ransacked the home and made off with a number of expensive items, including designer handbags and jewellery.

They called the police but sources say the raid has left them “terrified” and “heartbroken”, according to the Sun.

CCTV is now being examined by detectives in the hopes of tracking down the culprit.

A friend told the Sun: “It’s just the most violating thing — to think that someone has been all over their belongings before they even realised what was happening is so upsetting.

“The brazenness of doing it while they were in the house is terrifying, and obviously they’re heartbroken that a lot of valuable items which meant a great deal to them — not just financially — have been taken.

“This is their dream home and they love their life there as a family.

“Suddenly it feels tarnished, but they’re determined to get on with their lives and obviously they’ll take every necessary step to ensure they are totally secure in the future.”

Cheshire Police confirmed that its officers had been called to the property at 10:45pm on Tuesday night.

They said: “The offenders have broken into the home stealing jewellery and handbags while the occupants were inside.”

The couple, both 29, had their son Axel in August 2021 and bought the house in cash the year before.

Former Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson and Manchester City goalie Ederson are among their neighbours.

A neighbour said: “This latest break-in is a real worry.

“This is a very quiet street and lots of residents have very good security, so it is quite frightening these thugs still feel comfortable enough to break in — especially when people are in. It must have been terrifying.”

In May, fellow Liverpool player and neighbour Andy Robertson increased security around his own home after a prowler sparked a “significant security breach” while he was away playing for Scotland.

A man was later arrested in connection with the incident.

EastEnders theory: Jay Mitchell proposes to unlikely resident before tragedy strikes

EastEnders fans were shocked when Honey (played by Emma Barton) got together with Jay (Jamie Borthwick) a couple of years ago. The unlikely pair had a significant age difference, and Jay had been like a son to Honey’s husband, Billy (Perry Fenwick). Recent scenes from the BBC soap saw the couple realising they weren’t the match they thought they had been as they began to want different things. Honey and Billy have since reunited, and official spoilers suggest Jay and Lola Pearce (Danielle Harold) will once again get close. Not wanting to wait around this time, could Jay pop the question before Lola receives some tragic news?

Spoilers reveal Lola will have her sights set on getting Ben Micthell (Max Bowden) and Callum Highway (Tony Clay) back together in upcoming episodes.

To force the estranged husbands to talk, she decides to help Callum’s nan Vi Highway (Gwen Taylor) move out of her house.

Roping Jay into her plans, Ben is soon brought along and Callum arrives home to find the group helping Vi.

Soon, he and Ben figure out it has all been a set-up, but the plans seem to work anyway.

They soon admit to each other they still have feelings, but the moment is interrupted by Ben’s SOIT officer.

Lola begins organising a surprise birthday party for Jay, convincing Callum to help her.

Once again, she is hoping the event will bring him and Ben closer.

Ben eventually agrees to help, but Jay arrives and informs him he doesn’t want to celebrate his birthday this year.

An oblivious Lola moves forward with her plans to throw Jay a huge party.

Ben and Callum are undecided if they should tell Lola that Jay doesn’t want to celebrate.

Later, Lola awaits everybody’s arrival at Peggy’s but has no idea that Alfie Moon (Shane Richie) has botched her plans.

Ben and Callum struggle to convince a reluctant Jay to celebrate and eventually tell him about Lola’s surprise.

Jay arrives and feigns enthusiasm as the crowd welcomes him.

As Lola tries to get him to enjoy himself, she discovers that Jay was already aware.

The conversation leads to a moment between the two, and Jay reveals Lola was the love of his life.

As Rocky Cant (Brian Conley) attempts to make a speech for Jay, Shirley Carter (Linda Henry) has a devious idea.

Could she convince Rocky to use his matchmaking skills to reunite Jay and Lola?

With Lola trying to ensure other former couples are happily getting back together, the locals could spot the spark between her and Jay and decide it’s their turn to intervene.

As the two realise they both have feelings for each other, they will likely decide to give things another go.

With Jay eager to make the relationship work this time, he might take drastic action.

Learning from his relationship with Honey, he could decide he wants to propose to his ex.

It’s possible the mechanic will pluck up the courage to ask Lola to be his wife.

A delighted Lola will probably say yes – but their happiness will be short-lived.

It has been reported that the soap plan to see Lola making a tragic exit after she is diagnosed with a brain tumour.

With plans for Lola to leave the soap in the near future, it’s probable that she will find out about her illness soon.

With her and Jay preparing for wedded bliss, the bombshell will be devastating news.

Will Jay remain by Lola’s side until her tragic exit from the soap?

Lola’s daughter Lexi Pearce (Isabella Brown) will also be left without a mother, so it seems Jay will be around to help her father, Ben, look after her.

Could the couple decide to stay engaged and get married before it’s too late?

NCIS season 20 theory: Torres to die as team faces never-before-seen mission in new promo

Special Agent Nicolas Torres (played by Wilmer Valderrama) has become one of the most hot-headed members of the NCIS team in recent years, and his reckless approach to missions could eventually become his downfall. Could new team leader Alden Parker (Gary Cole) be on the lookout for another field agent when the CBS drama returns from yet another gripping case next week?

Torres is caught by surprise in the latest thrilling teaser for next week’s edition of NCIS.

In the third episode of season 20, Unearth, the team are faced with yet another baffling murder mystery.

This time, Dr Jimmy Palmer (Brian Dietzen) and the agents are left baffled when they find a body filled with large stones.

“That’s certainly a first,” Palmer utters when he examines one of the strange objects in the new promo.

A synopsis for Unearth reads: “When a dead body is found at an ancient burial site that is thought to be cursed, the team tries to determine the motive and the symbolism behind the crime.

“Also, as Torres continues therapy with Dr Grace, he discovers that their lives are in danger.”

While fans will be fascinated by the latest investigation, it’s Torres’ predicament which could send up red flags during next week’s episode.

This episode will be the first time viewers will see Dr Grace Confalone this season (Laura San Giacomo) after her introduction in season 19.

Unfortunately, Torres’ progress with therapy will have to be cut short when he realises they’re both being targeted.

There hasn’t been any word on Wilmer’s exit from the series just yet, but could this be the way viewers have to say goodbye to another fan-favourite agent?

In the trailer, Parker warns: “We have a country’s national treasure to recover.”

The clip then cuts to Torres hunching over Dr Confalone, who appears to be unconscious.

Outlander’s Caitriona Balfe announces ‘break’ from season 7 filming [UPDATE]

This England boss ‘didn’t seek approval’ from Downing Street [INTERVIEW]

He checks her pulse, but it’s not yet confirmed whether she’s alive or dead.

As he remains knelt on the floor, the agent reaches for his gun but is taken by surprise by an unseen assailant.

It may be time for Torres to hand in his NCIS badge if he’s starting to let his guard down like this.

Torres’ gun is kicked out of his hand, but the trailer cuts away before the result of the fight is revealed.

So far, it’s unclear how Dr Confalone connects to the stolen artefacts, but she could be a pawn in the mastermind’s plan to smuggle treasure inside dead bodies.

Thankfully, Torres is already on the case, although his foe may have gotten enough of an upper hand to take the agent out for good.

The series has yet to indicate Torres’ death or departure this season, though he could also potentially be injured badly enough in the scuffle to grant him some time off away from the field.

Hopefully, this isn’t the end for the impulsive agent, though viewers will certainly be watching with bated breath when the next episode rolls around.

NCIS season 20 continues Mondays on CBS in the USA. A UK release date is yet to be announced.

The Block quitter Elle Ferguson bonds with last year’s ‘cheater’ Tanya Guccione

Controversial Blockheads Elle Ferguson and Tanya Guccione looked like best friends on Wednesday as they were spotted together at an influencer event in Sydney.

Elle, 36, is notorious for quitting the latest season just two days into filming, whereas Tanya, 40, infamously cheated during last year’s season.

The pair huddled in for a ‘chat’ at the party, where they no doubt bonded over their ‘villain’ edits on the Channel Nine renovation show.

Makeup artist Tanya posted a photo of the two on Instagram, writing in the caption, ‘You bet we had a chat,’ alongside a winking emoji.

Elle looked classy in an all-black ensemble while Tanya rocked her signature vibrant colours and bright purple hair.

Both women made a big impact on The Block in the last two years, leaving an impression on viewers that won’t soon be forgotten.

Tanya was at the centre of the show’s biggest cheating scandal in its 17-year history.

She became public enemy number one after taking a photo of the production schedule early on in the season, giving her and husband Vito an unfair advantage.

She initially claimed she had been sent the photo from an ‘anonymous tradie’ but was thrown under the bus during The Block finale in November last year when fellow contestants Josh and Luke Packham shared details of what happened.

The Love Island twins, 27, implicated Tanya, saying she was the one who took the photo of the production schedule and sent it to them.

She eventually broke down in tears and came clean before going on to place third with Vito, making $400,000 profit after selling their property for $3.8million.

Elle and her fiancé Joel Patfull spent only two days on set of The Block this year.

The Bondi-based couple quit the show just 48 hours in after Joel’s mother Trish fractured her neck during a fall at her home.

However, the influencer and retired AFL player were later accused of leaving for ‘p**s poor’ reasons when they downed tools in April.

Host Scotty Cam, 59, didn’t mince words and called their departure ‘un-Australian’, accusing them of fleeing The Block in the middle of the night without explanation.

Sources hit back at the claims, saying Joel’s mother’s injury was more extensive than first thought and alleged the pair had a meeting with Block executive producer Julian Cress before leaving the show.
